Cluster Tecnologico Nazionale Fabbrica Intelligente (CTNFI)

Project: Smart Manufacturing 2020. Development and application of new digital technologies in support of manufacturing. Project in collaboration with Brembo SpA.

The “Cluster Tecnologico Nazionale Fabbrica Intelligente (CTNFI)” presented to MIUR 4 projects with the purpose of developing industrial research activities and connected activities of training for researchers.

The third project, entitled Smart Manufacturing, aims to apply new digital technologies in support of manufacturing, in order to make manufacturing companies more competitive, productive and responsive to market requirements. It also intends to introduce improvements in products, services and methods of production thanks to ICT technologies, to provide the best efficiency and quality.

CELS collaborates in Smart Manufacturing projects in the research of solutions for single piece traceability of products from System Division of Brembo SpA, also through the evaluation of introducing new technologies, such as RFID.

ABB: Re-engineering of ABB Service Portfolio

The project with ABB started in 2012 with the main aim to re-engineer the current ABB service portfolio and to improve effectiveness and efficiency of them. The project entails the application of SErvice Engineering Methodology (SEEM) to the ABB service processes. The methodology has been developed in the CELS research group and consists in 4 main allowing the identification of a proper balance between the customer perceived value and the company profitability. They are the following:

1. Identification of ABB service offering

2. Market analysis and definition of customer’s needs

3. Design requirements and specification analysis

4. Simulation of the service provision process

The methodology has been adopted and applied in 2 different ABB divisions and 3 different Business Units (BU): Low voltage products, Robots and Motors. For each BU different services have been taken into account and a simulation model representing the process has been developed.

The project feedbacks are positive. Among them, the ability of the simulation model to create awareness and to contribute in taking decisions are the most important. Research methodology is also positively evaluated by the research community.

University and ABB together for an high innovation international research project about Engineering and Service Management.

ABB has selected Unibg project between over 500 proposal.

The first meeting for the research project called “Engineering and assessing condition-based maintenance product-service solutions” has happened on 28th April 2013, at Engineering Campus of University of Bergamo, between Engineering Department and ABB.

At the meeting have partecipated, in addition to the university researcher, Christopher Ganz (Global Service R&D Manager), Luciano Tacconi (LP Division Global Service Manager), Zied Ouertani (ABB Corporate Researcher) e Francesco Piccioni (DM Division Service Manager Italy). The project, financied to ABB, world leader firm on energy and automation who have also a branch in Bergamo and Dalmine, is selected, with over other 40 projects, between over 500 research proposal presented from over 250 Research Center and international University in 46 countries to answer to a project competition for high innovation projects lunched from ABB Corporate Research (Zurigo).

“Engineering and assessing condition-based maintenance product-service solutions”, project focused on active collaboration between ABB and research Group CELS (Research Group on Industrial Engineering, Logistics and Service Operations), coordinating by Prof. Sergio Cavalieri, is focused on engineering and Service management themes which are connected to a system lifetime cycle, like predictive maintenance services, remote-control assistance and spare parts logistics.

In particular, in the lifetime of the project will be used innovative design methodology and simulation focused on the evaluation of the performance for the activity of the services related to a management of product lifetime cycle. This methodologies will be applied in some pilot cases gived by ABB Italia, with particular relevance to Low Voltage Products and Discrete Automation divisions. Some tests are already in progress in Bergamo and Dalmine ABB sections with the support of some Management and Mechanical Engineering students.

The collaboration will be for two years and an international perspective for its innovative theme on academic and industrial level. From 2010 for its capacity of innovation and this strategic important theme, research group CELS is promoting an european project which involved, some european research center, also some eminent university of Japan, USA, Australia and Brazil.

Master in Technologies and Processes for the Textile Supply Chain

Graduates of these programme are expected to understand the whole process of converting fibre materials to end product and are able to:

plan and manage textile production processes
develop and industrialize new products

Programme

The master programme is structured into three macro-areas: “From fibres to yarn”,

“From yarn to clothes” and “Management”.

“From fibres to yarn” – this area aims at developing knowledge related to natural and man-made fibres and to spinning technologies. Fundamentals of textile chemistry are also provided.

“From yarn to clothes” – this area aims at developing knowledge related to technologies for weaving and finishing. A background on functional textiles is also provided.

“Management” – this area aims at developing general knowledge on statistics methods and tools, operations and strategy management, and energy system characteristics and functions.

Entrance requirements

The Master can be attended by people having a Master of Science or a Bachelor degree. People having a high school diploma can attend the Master as auditors.

SIMAN

The project SIMAN aims automating maintenance of a company operating in the SII (Integrated Water System). The implementation of the project involves the development of a management system in accordance with procedures standardized maintenance, different types of systems through the implementation of a Maintenance Information System and a remote control system. The types of systems under analysis are the water collection and water distribution and wastewater treatment plants.

TRUCK INDUSTRY FOCUS GROUP

The main project goal is to identify management and organizational solutions to achieve efficiency and effectiveness for after-sales service networks in the Truck industry. In particular the project is based on the following sub-objects:

Identification of main service processes
Analysis of service process efficiency (cost and time)
Analysis of service process effectiveness (quality and service mix)
Identification of improvement solutions.

The research project involves the Italian division of four major European Truck companies (VOLVO TRUCK, IVECO, DAF and MAN).

Bringing projects on time and on budget is always a challenge. With the competing demands for labour and capital, projects have many internal and external forces that can contribute to a derailment. It takes a strong sense of direction, efficiency and leadership to keep the project on track.
In such a context this project aims at developing three aspects of the Project Management which have to be optimized to achieve a successful project in the Service industry:

people, proposing and monitoring an action plan to develop the Project Management Community;

organization and processes, increasing efficiency and optimizing the use of resources, by means of process standardization and best practice definition;

risk, identifying a managerial approach to monitor and allocate resources in large and critical projects.

LEAN LOGISTICS

The aim of the project – carried out in a manufacturing company – is to optimize production and logistics processes through the implementation of lean logistics approaches.
The project encompasses the following main phases:
•   Value analysis through the value stream mapping method
•   Identificaion of the main critical areas
•   Implementation of lean approaches (Hoshin, SMED, 5S, Kanban…)
•   Performance monitoring

Forecasting and planning are two of the most studied areas in the field of operations management. Nonetheless, there are some sectors that require peculiar activities in order to seize all the involved facets.
This project is developed in the niche sector of vehicle tuning components (i.e. car components for both aesthetics and performance customizations) with the aim at establishing a suitable forecasting process.
Main problems that arise are the relatively low quantity of units sold per item and the erratic character of the demand. Due to these elements, the forecasting process should, more than in other cases, rely on efficient relationship with suppliers, in order to guarantee the necessary flexibility to respond to highly variable customers demand.
Main activities involved in the project are:

AS-IS Production process analysis to fully understand all the aspects involved in the production process.

Analysis of critical components and materials used in the production process, such as carbon fiber.

Statement of a proper forecasting workflow, supported by suitable software routines, and performed with the aim at anticipating the gross requirements of critical components and material, allowing placing the orders to suppliers in advance.

INVMAN

This project is carried out in a company realizing heating and cooling plants in industrial buildings. Each construction job order involves hundreds of items of diverse sizes (from nuts and bolts to complex subsystems). Part of these items are managed at the company’s warehouse (on a stock basis), while others are managed on a per-order basis (bought only when required).
The project aims at:

Identifying the proper management policy for different item classes.

Establishing the average items consumption rates and the items commonality in the different types of construction job orders.

Assessing the impact of items commonality on stock level.
